Happy Easter, aka Zombie Jesus Day!
Anyone else going to the Philly Zombie Crawl on South Street tonight? I'll be there with Jake and my friend Devi. Everyone should come out for zombie drunken mayhem. Festivities start at Tattooed Mom around 6pm (to get ready/do makeup) and 8pm officially kicks off the crawl.

| 30,000 animals in Philly need your help |

PAWS/PACCA (phillypaws.org), the city shelter, takes in over 30,000 homeless and abandoned animals a year. PAWS is the donor funded division of PACCA which is the city contracted animal control association. Well the Animal Control Contract is up and the health department originally signed a contract giving another year to PACCA, and really made it seem like after this year they would be signing another long term contract. Well now suddenly they have cancelled that and have written a new RFP that no longer talks about the adoption aspect of animal control.
Basically the new RFP says that whoever holds the animal control contract, is to catch and "dispose" of 30,000 animals a year. The previous RFP said catch and release preferably by adoption. It no longer says that, and is basically a "Catch and Kill" proposal. To expand on this a little, this means if your cat gets out, and picked up, it will be killed within the hour. There is NO stray hold on cats in PA. It doesnt matter if its microchipped, microchipped animals are held as a "courtesy" which will no longer apply. If your dog gets out it will be held for 48 hours and euthanized at the 48hr mark. You could of been looking for your dog for weeks prior to it getting picked up, and it won't matter, once the 48 hours up your dog is dead.
The way the RFP is written now, NO animal welfare organization should bid on it from a moral and ethical stand point. But unfortunately it is very likely that the PSPCA will.
If PACCA loses the contract more then 30,000 animals will be killed. The PSPCA takes in 10,000 animals statewide. The new RFP does not state that the bidder needs to have a facility. They do not need to open a new facility or use the current one to get the contract, where these animals go is not important to them.
So I am begging all of you, to help me, You do not have to be a resident of Philadelphia or even Pennsylvania. You just have to be pet owners and animal lovers that are concerned with Philadelphia's approach to animal welfare. The animals cannot tell us that they want to live and we have to be their voice.

If I win I get a custom designed outfit from last season's Project Runway winner, Christian Siriano....and who knows what else. I'm already at 33 and the chick who's at 1 has a shit-ass hairdo. She's just sittin there with her hand in her hair, no fun colors, no interesting cut...just *yawn* My hair is at least cooler than that. |
